Just noticed that the youngest child, Florence was born 1889, so providing she was William's child that means he died between 1888 - 1891.

He was a metal worker - nut and bolt forger - on the 1881 census. I guess the shipyards would be his most likely place of employment. There is no other information on his occupation. Some of his sons joined the Navy and merchant marines. I am still trying to find out where he worked in Hull, and then maybe that would lead to his cause of death? The time frame is quite specific for his death - youngest child born in 1889 and his wife is widowed in 1891
Pointon in Hull and Staffordshire
Clark from Manchester, then West Ham
Koenig in Chicago
Baird and Scott from Dundee Scotland

The nearest I can see is this death which may have been transcribed incorrectly, but would mean he'd only just died when the census was taken.

The fact that there is a family grave and others are recorded does make me think that perhaps he was lost at sea. It might be worth searching local newspapers to see if there is any mention of deaths during the time span you have.

thanks to all who helped me with this - very helpful, and kind of feel a little validated because William's death is still a mystery, it is just not my lack of experience.
