Mystery notation on 1907 Qld birth certificate

Does anyone know what these mean?

These symbols are on a 1907 Queensland birth certificate which I downloaded today. The bottom image is beside the mother's name, and the other is beside a note written in the border. The baby was illegitimate if that has any bearing. I have googled for possible explanations but found nothing.

Additionally, the birth certificate was not the usual foolscap orientation, rather it was laid out horizontally across two pages. I have not seen one like this before.

I am very NSW centric,  so not much chop on Qld.  BUT that looks like a stamp for the Honorable East India Co .... and of course 1907 and Qld is wrong  century and wrong colonial jurisdiction...

It is used just like an asterisk telling you that the note is in reference to the mother's name.

   Yes, now looking at the image on a puter instead of an e-reader,  definitely not a stamped impression, I ought to have known that ... shhhh ... senior moments perhaps...

Debra is of course spot on, that's an asterisk.        

 I need specs just for e-reading late at night....

It is an odd one - I wonder if the symbol has a name?

I thought it must have had some deeper meaning (possibly) related to illegitimacy ... unfortunately not.

It may have been an artistic note which had 'deeper meaning' to himself
