William Henry Brown, born in 1868 Marylebone, Middx
« on: Sunday 26 May 19 19:16 BST (UK) »
Hello all,
I have an ancestor William Henry Brown, born in 1868 Marylebone, Middx.
the son of George and Elizabeth.
I believe he may have fought in India and his rank was sergeant major. we have no marriage as that could have happened in India but we do have a daughter who came to live with her grandmother and aunt. although we appear to have a birth 31st may 1894 her name May Alicia Eleonor Brown. I am wondering how can i find her fathers service record and also how would i find a marriage in India please.

kind regards

Sue Ault

Hi Sue,

What evidence do you have that William was a sergeant major and served in India?

On the 1901 Marylebone census
she is with her grandmother Elizabeth and aunt Alice
on her marriage certificate, she gives her fathers rank as sergeant major HM Forces.
A fellow researcher has stated they believe her parents married in India.
I have a marriage for her and she is on the 1939 census and I have a death for her. But no mother for her sadly.

I think this is the 1901 Rosie -

Elizabeth Brown   71
Alice Brown   30
Mary Brown   granddaughter 7 (name has been amended to May Alicia Eleanor Brown)

However the above Mary/May was born in Marylebone, London  ???

…. how would i find a marriage in India please.
Look at Sub Boards - Other Countries  - Resources. Click on Forum at top of this page then scroll past Isle of Man, Alderney etc. Research in other Countries is below them. Scroll past Australia …  United States of America. India is under heading Other Countries.

Reviewing what you have:

In 1871 I find a William Henry Brown age 3 son of George and Elizabeth only in Whitehaven Cumberland.  He, William, was born in Kent (the father George was a sergeant major (1868) in the Royal Artillery)

The only William Henry born Marylebone is 7 months old in 1871 and has parents William H and Jane.

I may not have the Marylebone one but could the first have become mixed with the second, especially given the rank of father George?
