I cannot find any birth registration for a Walter or Walter John Lodge between 1900 and 1911.  Nor can I find anything that looks like his mother on the 1911 census.

There doesn't seem to be any information on Find My Past about Walter's enlistment in 1925.  Did you access any image for his military enlistment?  Sometimes there are family details on the original image which can be helpful.

Records relating to the workhouse can be found at the Essex Records Office but whether any of them would be of any help I can't say.

They have a register of births which covers the years 1866 to 1914 - Ref G/Br W21

What do you know about his mother other than her name?  When and where was she born?  Did she marry at all or is Lodge her married name?

Have you found him on the 1939 register which should show his exact date of birth?

If his mother was still alive then you can look for her also, it might help.

There's a Lilla Emma Lodge born 1886 Dunmow Essex - could she be mum?

Just noticed there is a 1 year old son in 1891 called Walter John so your Walter John named after him perhaps.

This is the birth record for the youngest child on the 1911 on which Walter appears

I suspect Walter may not have had his birth recorded.
