Is this a reliable source?
« on: Monday 27 May 19 02:47 BST (UK) »
Hello all. I've come across what seems to be a goldmine of information about one of my lines, containing confirmation of parents and spouses that I had seen on other public trees a few years ago but had been unable to prove with sources. However, the more I inputted the information, the more I felt like even this document was nothing more than someone else's 'public tree', albeit made over 100 years ago. Can anyone guide me as to how this kind of Appendix would have been produced, and how much I can take her work at face value? Is it reliable enough to list as a source in my tree? Can I expect to find similar transcribed registers with edited Appendices for other parishes?

The register seems like a simple enough transcription, but most of the information I am getting comes not from the register but from the Appendix. It is organised by name and lists various 'facts' about people with that name but does not give the references or sources as to how the family ties were confirmed. I am still struggling to find register-based sources of her information:

not sure if other Vols are online as it depends on what Tags they are given!

Thanks for the replies so far. Allow me to follow up:

I haven't used this website before, but I am currently editing my family tree using Family Search directly. Does this website offer any sources in addition to what I would normally find on FS, or is it an alternative way to search the same sources? The relationships and individuals mentioned in the source I posted are not found on FS, but can it be that they have not yet been uploaded/transcribed there? I notice that there are some records on the website you suggested that say "Details to be added".

Yes - I posted Volume 2 (1654-1711) and you have posted Volume 1 (1541-1654). I was confused by the fact that when I search key names in both of these, many of the ones I'm looking for come up in the edited Appendices, but not the main records. Now that I write this, I realise that the records cover dates earlier than I need, but the Appendices contain the editor's research that continues well into the 19th Century. So I suppose she transcribed the records and then continued to update the family lines in the Appendices with her personal knowledge or additional research. I just wish she had given some more references... Is this kind of semi-edited document commonly found in other parishes?

To see what I mean - the Appendix starts on page 292. My main example is trying to verify whether James Bever (Beevers) (b 1724) really married Sarah Swallow (d 1788). This is the only source I can find that states this, and several other public trees have accepted it as fact, presumably based on this source. The marriage is not listed on the records supplied through ArchersSoftware mentioned above by Warncoort. I am therefore asking whether the book in question is reliable enough.

Ancestry have images for the Kirkburton registers but to me they are pretty much illegible.  They have indexed the marriage as Sarah SWALLOW and James BARDEN and having spotted the name BEEVER (etc) elsewhere in the registers it is an understandable mistranscription.

The later entries are better - I can see the burial of James and Sarah's son Joshua in 1778 and page 562 your source shows the exact wording of the register except to add that the cause of death was dropsy.  Also the burials of James BEEVER in 1780 and Sarah in 1788, no more info than what has been transcribed in your source.

Perhaps someone else can have a look at that 1744 register.

OK, this is much more legible.

https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3Q9M-CSHH-LCPX

It is the second line from the bottom.

The catalogue shows you what is indexed and what is image only and also those records that are locked for viewing only at a LDS centre.

Here is the 1744 entry of Sarah Swallows marriage

I have altered the contrast to try to make the image clearer but still cannot read James' surname
