when did william ball and margaret ball come to australia
« on: Monday 27 May 19 10:47 BST (UK) »
Hi all,
Any help greatly appreciated.
William Ball m. Margaret Bailey in 1837 at St Mary of Aldermary, Middlesex
They had two children in England. John Gow Ball and Ann Ball listed in the 1841 census.
About ten years later, William and Margaret had about 8 more children in South Australia.
It's a complete mystery as to when they arrived in Australia.

Help!
regards, Dougmc :)

There is a W BALL, wife and child (died at sea) arrived SA 14 Sept 1848 on the Royal George from London. A possibility? I see that their earliest child born in SA was Eliza - registered in Adelaide in 1851.

At the following free to search online index
https://www.familyhistorysa.org/shipping/passengerlists.html

BALL W, wife, child (d@sea) arrived in SA 1848-09-14 aboard Royal George from London 48-05-25 via Plymouth

That would seem to match up with Maddy's sighting

Adelaide Observer 23 Feb 1878 p3
https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/159439736?
BALL - At Wagga Wagga, NSW, John Gow eldest son of the late Mr William BALL   of this city, 39 years.

BDM NSW death
9260/1877 BALL  John G parents John G / Margaret @ Wagga Wagga  (24 Nov 1877)

Do you have this death certificate. It would record years in the colony, and time in each colony.

I meant to add that there is also this arrival in June 1850 on the Lady McNaughton from London "William Ball and wife"
http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article159532853

So 2 possibilities. As wivenhoe says, the death certificate could provide some useful info.

I did post the following information on a similar string about William and Margaret Ball (nee Bailey) so you might already have read this:

William Ball and Margaret Bailey are my great, great grandparents. From research by my late aunt more than 30 years ago, which included interviews with her father (William's grandson), we have the following:
William b. c1813, d.1871.
Margaret b.1821, d.1904
First two children not known but believed born in England and we don't know whether they came to South Australia, died in infancy or stayed in England.
William: b. 1844, d.1868
James: b.1847, d.1926
Margaret: b.c1850, d.1926
Eliza: b.1851, d. ?
Amelia: b.1853, d. ?
Charlotte: birth and death unknown, died in infancy
Charles: b.1863, d.1930

I mean to add that only the last four children were born in Australia (Adelaide). There were nine children in all, five of whom were born in Britain. Those I have listed are the only ones whose names we have. The first two names by dougmc in his opening post fill a gap for us. We did not even have their gender.
Interestingly, Charles Ball's seventh and final child was a son with the middle name 'Gow'. He died in infancy.
