Louisa Elks bastardy claim.
« on: Monday 27 May 19 11:06 BST (UK) »
It would be fair to say this lady has drove me crazy for many a year.
If you search roots chat you will found numerous posts trying to nail her. It was with grateful thanks to the awesome researchers on the limerick section of the group. I have finally found her.

You see Louisa likes to lie and defraud people.
I have found a few court cases all around Uttoxeter, obtaining goods under false pretence s from shop keepers, which seems to be her "modus operandi "

HOWEVER.....
IN the Derbyshire advertiser on the 16th September 1853, in the Staffordshire petty sessions, whilst being prosecuted for obtaining goods under false pretence s from Michael Deaville, which she is sentenced to a prison, she yet again throws me a curve ball!!
IN the newspaper article straight underneath

"THE SAME LOUISA ELKS VS RICHARD WHITEHURST, of Rochester in order of bastardy, order made for 1s 3d a week on account of the girls imprudence".

How can I find more information on this,?
Did it actually happen or is it another lie?
What happened to the child?

Thanks in advance.x

A Lucy Elks b abt 1852 is with her grandparents - William and Ann ELKS - in 1861 and her grandfather in 1871

1861 https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:M74R-DC9
1871 https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:V5R6-Z9H
1881 https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:Q27V-X1Y2   Workhouse

But Louisa's father is James we think so can rule this one out

She is perhaps Frances/Fanny’s daughter

Birth certificate would help.

in the 1858 trial, when she was sent to prison, there was no mention of her having a child.

I have found a Ann Elks dying in uttoxeter union workhouse aged 2 yrs. Buried 11th may 1855.
Louisa was in prison 12 months from 29th november 1854.

Have started searching for workhouse records for admissions.

I haven't found a registration for the child just the burial.
If the statement of the court is true, she did have the child. That was an earlier misdeeds before she met have a in 1857
Looking st the "limerick  thread" and starting searching through ancestry.  Her father died in 1839, I have found a death in the same place for a Hannah Shaw age 40 in Alton  dying in the same year along with an infant , possibly childbirth??? Looks like she was an orphan, so possibly no one to look after the child whilst she was in prison

Yes, I've been looking at that burial.  I can't see a birth to match it

She was in prison almost continually from that first 3 month sentence end of October 1853.
Sentenced to 6 mths March 1854
Then 12 mths end of November 1854!

I was under the impresssion they took small children to prison with them... In prison anyway so no advantage to the authorities for them to be put in the workhouse?
