George Ward burial 1919
« on: Monday 27 May 19 21:12 BST (UK) »
Am trying to work out the name of the cemetery where George is buried from a letter enclosed in his son's military notes.

George and his wife Gertrude had parted around 1910 and in their son's military notes for George Roy Ward, there are family letters which includes a note of where George snr was buried. It looks like Faulknee/r Cemetery and on gooogling, found the Fawkner Cemetery in Victoria. George lived in Adelaide to May 1917 but had an operation at St. Vincent's Hospital, Melbourne 1919 where he passed away shortly afterwards.

From Trove, his death was 17 Jan 1919 and in the letter Gertrude wrote, Jan 26th.

Have only found this one announcement
The Advertiser (Adelaide, SA : 1889 - 1931)
Monday 20 January 1919
WARD.-On the 17th January, at  St. Vincent's Hospital, Melbourne George Ward, of Charles -street, Adelaide, loving father of Doris and the late Roy Ward, killed in France.

A dedication followed this and was not a family member

Have this ref from a previous query thread

Australia, Death Index, 1787-1985
Name:    Geo Ward
Birth Year:    abt 1866
Age:    53
Death Place:    Fitzroy, Victoria
Father's name:    Ward Geo
Mother's name:    Ward Unknown
Registration Year:    1919
Registration Place:    Victoria

His business was based in Adelaide as he was a tailor and have no reference of him in Melbourne until reading the letter.

The letter is here page 40

Hoping someone can tell me if I have the right cemetery as I can't see him on the Fawkner burial search website.

Many thanks

Thanks DavidG02

As I am more familiar with UK BMD's, is there any way I can look further into this burial?

These two cemeteries are relatively close to each other, so I can understand his wife getting them confused if she isn't from Melbourne.

Thanks Jennaya, Gertrude married the man she left George for shortly after George died, so she might not have known the precise details.

Thanks Jennaya, Gertrude married the man she left George for shortly after George died, so she might not have known the precise details.

The letter you refer to is signed D. WARD and the address from which it was sent was Parkville.

As you do not have the death certificate for George, you cannot be certain who the informant was, but it is clear Gertrude was well out of the picture in WA , and more likely it was D. WARD who advised on the details

The death notice placed by  F M TASKER, makes no mention of Gertrude and so doubt she had anything to do with the burial.

I see you have looked into who was F M TASKER in a previous thread.

D. Ward is his daughter, wish I had put Tasker in the search as I couldn't find the thread, sorry about that.
