Roberts family headache
« on: Tuesday 28 May 19 13:07 BST (UK) »
Hi everyone,

My partner was interested in tracing her surname and thought that it might be easier than the headache im currently having with my Stevensons, so decided to take a break from my tree and decided to start work on hers.

Im not sure which county to put this in as the family seem to be all over Wales.

Im looking for a Joseph Roberts, and according to the 1911 census was living in Ferndale, in the Rhondda with his wife Gwen along with his brother and his children.
Joseph states he is 33 and born in Llandudno. His older brother David is 43 and also born Llandudno.

1901, Joseph is in Ferndale but states his age as 27. Appears to be living with the Edwards family. There appears to be a 6 year discrepancy between the two, but when I do some searching of the 1881 there does appear to be a Robert Roberts of Bala, with wife Catherine who have a David and a Joseph as kids.

There is also another Joseph Roberts who is stated born in India working in a hotel.

Can anyone please help with this? Its driving me round the bend.

Many thanks,
David.

I think you may need to get the marriage certificate for Joseph and Gwen to see if it gives his father's name and occupation.

The discrepancy in ages on censuses is not necessarily a problem - census ages are notoriously inaccurate.

I think you will find both Joseph and David in 1881 showing as the sons of a Robert and Catherine Roberts and living in Llandudno.5583/124,37.

If Robert does prove to be the father of David & Joseph, Catherine may not be their mother. Robert Roberts married Catherine Fenton jun qtr 1878 Conway vol 11b pg 889 hence Fenton stepson in 1881. By 1891, Robert is married to Harriet.

Thank you everyone. I did see the Fenton stepson but the age was between the age ranges of Roberta children!

Affair possibly? Skeletons in the closet?

Many thanks,
David.

Surely the Fenton stepson was the son of Catherine born prior to her marriage to Robert in 1878.

Doing the maths, going by the age of Joseph in 1911, I work it to be a 1878 birth. The marriage of Robert Roberts and Catherine has been given also 1878.

I think I would do as Philipsearching suggested and obtain the marriage cert of Joseph and Gwen.

PS I`ve just looked on FreeBMD and there are 11 marriages for Joseph Roberts between 1901 and 1911 in the county of Glamorgan, discounting the ones in Llanelli , Cardiff and Swansea, it leaves 4 in Pontypridd and 1 in Neath. I haven`t time to cross check against Gwen as a spouse. Good luck.

Whilst of course a possible Marriage Certificate would be helpful, what would be of course of more importance is Joseph's Birth Certificate. For those not familiar with the area the Registration District is Conway.
