Workhouses in Co Donegal
« on: Tuesday 28 May 19 22:23 BST (UK) »
Ellen Stewart lived at  Carrigans, St Johnston, East Donegal, she died in 1929. The address recorded on the death certificate is I believe Co House, Co Donegal.  Does anyone know if that was a workhouse?  Thankyou for any information
Stewart, Reilly, Montgomery, Cheshire, Lyttle, Rankin, Apthorpe, Hart, Anderson,  Gourley

Co Home.
The workhouses became County Homes.

Thank you for the information,  I think she may have been in the workhouse at Ballylennon.

Here's a link to Ellen's death certificate-

Since the registration district (and sub-district) is Stranorlar then the place of death would be the former Stranorlar Workhouse-

Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

Thanks aghadowey, I think that you are correct.  This poor lady Ellen Stewart nee Thompson married my Great Grandfather in 1897 and left him a few years later, my G Grandfather went to court to try and get her back then she moved around E Donegal and L Derry where she was evicted from various houses as the owner died and she had nowhere to go.  It must have been hard living on your own at that time.

On her death certificate says she was a widow, and a Housekeeper, looks like Danial McGuire
