28 John Street, LUTON
« on: Thursday 30 May 19 12:28 BST (UK) »
Hi everyone,

I'm looking for some information on the address 28 John Street in Luton.

I have a pdf of a birth certificate that gives 28 John Street as the address in 1883. I've searched it on the censuses of 1881 and 1891 but it doesn't appear. Then I've found it in a newspaper article as being a place of business.

I'm not from the area so I have no idea about it but it seems odd that it was listed as a residence.

Thanks in advance.

If you look in 1891 you can see 2U written between Numbers 26 & 32 John Street.   Means 2 uninhabited . There are plenty of people living in the street.

Reference

RG12/1272/138/26

And wouldn’t you know it.its uninhabited in 1881 too.  Everyone around is making straw hats :)

Uninhabited in 1901 too!

I'm guessing this was a row of lock-up shops with flats above.

In 1911 28 John Street is a Dye Works and 18-24 and 26 are Straw Hat Factories. There is no reason why a birth could not have taken place in a place of business.

Don't forget that Luton FC are known as "The Hatters"

Thanks everyone. I know the mother was a milliner from Leighton Buzzard. I just found it odd that the address seems to be uninhabited in most (if not all) of the censuses.

This family was difficult to find and now that I've found them I have more questions than answers. That's the way it goes I suppose.

In both 1911 & 1917 Luton Year Book & Directory at 28 John Street is Bracey Bros.
In the Commercial & Trades Index, under Bleachers & Dyers, Bracey Bros are at 28 John Street.

They also list a John Bracey at 89 Clarendon Road and a Horace Bracey at 10 Crawley Green Road,. if these are the Bracey Brothers

On 1911 census they are at those addresses, John age 50 & Horace age 41, both born Harpenden, both Bleachers & Dyers, & employers, and tracking them back in censuses, are sons of Isaac & Matha Bracey.

Cheers John
