What is Katherine's surname?
« on: Thursday 30 May 19 12:55 BST (UK) »
Hello,
Attached is a couple of marriages from Blackford. I'm trying to work out Katherine's surname but am having a great deal of difficulty with one or two letters. If anyone knows what Katherine's surname is or may be, that would be great.
Thank you all kindly.
Keith

FreeReg has the marriage and transcribes the surname as Awse.

It also appears twice in the Somerset Marriage Index, once as Awse and once as Avrse.

Just below the surname is the word 'were' - look at the way the 'w' is written, then look at the surname again.

Thanks most kindly for that. Awse seems to be a REALLY uncommon name. There were some born in Sherborne, Dorset in the 1680s and some in Barnstaple, Devon in the 1680s and 1690s. That appears to be about it. There was a Catharine baptized in Sherborne in 1680. However the Katherine in the marriage entry is given as Mrs, thus probably a widow.
I can't find the Avrse in the Somerset Marriage Index on FindMyPast. so if you could point me to a copy, that would be great.
Once again, thanks.

Search in Parish Marriages for Charles Bull, 1712, Blackford, Somerset and it should come up with 2 entries. Well, it does for me.

At that time "Mrs" was an indication of social status, not marital. That was as likely to have come from her father as from a previous husband.

So the Catharine born in 1680 is a possible match.
