Family of John Roe C1717-1770
« on: Friday 31 May 19 00:04 BST (UK) »
I have been able to trace my family to John Roe who I believe was born 1717 in Halstock, Dorset and died 1770 in Wareham, Dorset. He married Mary Bishop in 1740.

I'm having trouble finding his Father, Grandfather and Greatfather.

I think they are:
Father: William 1692 Poole - 1740 Halstock
Grandfather: Nicholas 1670 Halstock - 1732 Poole
Great Grandfather: Azariah 1649 - 1683 Halstock

Things don't really add up tho. Why would they bounce between Halstock and Poole between being born, having kids and dying? I'm not sure I have the right people

I've looked on OPCDorset but the records don't go back far enough!

Any help on John's predecessors would be amazing!

Many thanks  ;D

Working backwards from your other post
Samuel Roe bn c1777 parents John & Ann

Possible parents - John Roe (widower) married Ann Hill (widow) 27 Feb 1775 at Wareham

Where do you have this John being born and when.  Who was his first wife

I can find the baptism of Wiiliam, 14 July 1692 in Poole, parents Nicholous and Howner (presumably Nicholas and Honor). The only burials I can find for a William Roe in 1740 are in Cranborne and Whitchurch Canonicorum.

Smith Tiplady Boulton Branthwaite King Miller Woolfall Bretherton Archer and many more

That was what I was seeing too Emeltom and why I was trying to work back to it from Samuel as I could not see the appropriate death for John :)

I have John Roe (Samuel's Father): Born 1750, Wareham. Died 1783, Wareham. I can't seem to find his first wife

I believe his father is also called John which might be confusing things? But I might be wrong

This is what I found for John's birth info on Ancestry:

Name John Ronis
Birth Date: 22 Dec 1750
Gender: Male
Event Type: Baptism
Father: John Ronis
Mother: Mary Ronis
Baptism Date: 18 Jan 1751
Baptism Place: Wareham, Dorset, England
Denomination Independent Piece Title Piece 0060: Wareham, Meeting House Lane (Independent), 1740-1789

I assumed it was transcribed incorrectly and is supposed to say Roe or Rowe instead of Ronis. Unless my family changed their name from Ronis at this time?

I think this may be his first marriage

John Roe - A Minor occ Cordwainer
Anne Hascal
03 Sep 1755
Groom was of parish of St Mary Holy Trinity

Burial at Wareham St Mary
10 Mar 1774
Ann Wife of John

That burial would fit in with a remarriage the following year.

Is 1755 the marriage year? As I have this John born in 1750

Could this Ann be his mother? I have his father as also being a John which might be confusing things?

Yes, 1755 was the marriage year.  Does his death give an age giving you 1750 as a birth year.
