Richard Hudson 1825-1853 of Ulverston, wine and spirit merchant
« on: Friday 31 May 19 10:42 BST (UK) »
I am related to this family who were originally in Cartmel as innkeepers.  One of the family moved to Ulverston and built up a small business as brewers and wine and spirit merchants.  Richard is one of this family.  He sadly died young (in his 20s) but he did have a wife and a son.  I know about them.  My question is this - does anyone know where and when he was married?  I know his wife was Eleanor (Ellen) Wright born 1822 at Rampside near Barrow in Furness; I also know that after Richard's death she then married William Orr (one of Richard's relatives) and they lived and died at Cartmel.  She was buried with her second husband and mentioned on his MI (and also added to Richard's MI at Ulverston!)  I have all that information, but still cannot trace a marriage.  Their son Richard was born in 1846 at Ulverston (GRO index confirms that), but I am puzzled by the lack of marriage...
Can anyone help please?
Ian

Maybe he wasn't the marrying kind.  I take it Eleanor married William Orr as a widow not a spinster.

Did Richard and she only have the one child?

There is a marriage in Scotland that might be worth checking out for a mistake

An Eleanor Wright married a Richard Hudson McIverton on 9 March 1846 in Dundee.

Seems a bit of a coincidence same names, right timeframe etc.

Hello Milliepede and claire,
Thanks for your thoughts.  Yes, they may not have been married..... but she is described as "relict" on the MI at Ulverson (for what that's worth), and I can find only one obvious child - Richard born 1846.
Ellen's  "second" marriage in 1866 is recorded in all the local newpapers (Ulverston, Kendal, Lancaster) and they report it as between William Orr of Cartmel and Mrs. Ellen Hudson of Ulverston - but strangely it took place at St. Andrew's Church, Bebington in Cheshire..... Quite why they should go there to be married is not at first sight obvious.  I have not seen the entry in the register.

Claire - yes, I had thought perhaps it could have been Scotland - but I still think it's strange the local newspapers would ignore this since the family were well known in Ulverston.. I will search further - thanks
Ian

thanks to garstonite and emeltom for replies.  I found the earlier baps for the various Richard Hudsons and Eleanor Wright some years ago, but it's always encouraging to find others coming to the same conclusions (I have before now gone off on completely the wrong track!).
The marriage register entry is definitely for the right person, and that reminds me I must look for Ellen/Eleanor on the 1861 census - I have a gap there.
Re Dundee - it looks as though this is probably the marriage, unlikely though it appears...
