For over 15 years there has been a successful Cotton/Cotten DNA Project in which well over 100 male Cottons, or variants of the surname, have taken Y-chromosome tests to discover if they are related to other Cottons whose test results are available for comparison within the group.  This helps to prove scientifically if two or more male Cottons share a common ancestor to validate a family tree.  The Y-chromosome is passed from father to son unchanged over many generations which is why tests support a One-Name Study.

If you scroll down the page and click on the heading of any Family group, you can see the lineage of each individual who has taken a test of which the results match those of others tested and shown in red on the same page.

The Y-DNA37 test is recommended as sufficiently accurate for meaningful comparison.
