Jane Gray Dow - death certificate
« on: Friday 31 May 19 17:31 BST (UK) »
Hi,
I'm having trouble reading this death cert - can't make out the father's occupation, mother's name or cause of death.

thank you!
I have a visual impairment which makes research difficult to please forgive any silly questions :)

Cause: dropped dead while in the act of gathering sticks probably heart disease.

I think father's occupation is Tanner.

Mother Nancy Dow, M.S. McGibbon.

Dropped down dead - but otherwise I agree entirely with JenB.

The margin note on the left refers to the Register of Corrected Entries, which might shed further light on the death. I've never needed to do it myself, but I understand a link is provided somewhere in the results at Scotland's People for you to access this information. (It's free!)
Researching among others:
Bartle, Bilton, Campbell, Craven, Emmott, Harcourt, Hirst, Kellet(t), Kennedy,
Meaburn, Mennile/Meynell, Metcalf(e), Palliser, Robinson, Rutter, Shipley, Stow, Wilkinson

I read the first one as:
The following report of result of
precognition has been received
touching the death of Jane Gray Dow or Moffat
registered under No. 67 in the Register
books of Deaths for year 1892

From your point of view, the most important bit in the other image is probably the cause of death: Natural causes.

I'm not very well up on Scottish legal procedures, but it seems to be the equivalent of an English inquest (the formal procedure), or of what happens when a death is reported to a coroner who then decides no inquest is needed (the less formal procedure). Some members here have worked in the registration service and may be able to explain this better than I can.
