Hi all you lovely roots chatters once again, can anyone tel me if there is a way to find out parents names before having to purchase a birth cert from UK they are so expensive!, I have a possible birth record for someone I have been trying to track down for many years but have tried finding this man on the census and nothing fits my information? thanks in anticipation of your suggestions as always

Baptism record?  If he married a fathers name could be shown but again that is another certificate unless the information is helpfully online.

What year are we talking about and what part of the UK?

If you can post the name and relevant info like place of birth maybe we can have a look for him.

Thanks I have his marriage cert for 1907 in London he names his father as William Gibbs (deceased) his own birth he says 1882 in Marleybone London, I have found only one birth on ancestry that matches his dates but of course would have to pay for the cert to see if the father matches, I have trolled all the census to see if I can find them as a family to no avail, he became an orphan quite young so the only census I have found him on is the 1901 living with a Thomas and Elizabeth Gammon (nee Gibbs) and he is named as nephew, thats as far as I have been able to piece him any help would be gratefully appreciated

Thank you that's something to go on.  The nephew bit should be especially helpful.

One thing - what is his own name?!

Elizabeth Gibbs father William Gibbs married Thomas Gammon in 1858.

In theory a brother or maybe sister of Elizabeth was the parent of Arthur so if we can trace Elizabeth back on the census to find her siblings some clue may come to light.
