A family tree has a photo of Arthur Walter Gibbs and gives his birth date as 17 Sep 1882 and death 1948 with wife Emily R Hill - is this your chap?

If so his father is given as William as you have said and mother as Mary E ?

How do you know he "became an orphan quite young"

Sorry there are other trees as well but the information is misleading  :-\

Back to the Gammons, can't yet find them in 1891 to see if Arthur is still with them as nephew.

Can you find them in 1891?

Ah might have something here  :D

Suddenly thought of looking for a birth under Gammon instead of Gibbs and this popped up.

Arthur Walter Gammon Sep 1882 Marylebone - no mothers maiden name

What do you think?  The first names, birth place and year match.

I think the 1901 nephew Albert William Gibbs married 1903, not 1907.
No kids by 1911

Sep 1/4 1903
Gibbs    Arthur William        Lewisham    1d   2122
Odd    Carrie Edwena        Lewisham    1d   2122

Baptism for Arthur Walter Gammon 29 Sep 1882

Mother Ellen Gammon
Yep this one is the one I'm leaning towards but Ellen is the daughter of Elizabeth and Thomas on that 1901 extract and her Mothers maiden name is Gibbs so how did he adopt the Gibbs name, I am so confused lol

He says his father is deceased in 1907 and there was never a mother mentioned either

It is confusing isn't it but maybe the Gibbs/Gammon families were close and the Gibbs brought him up.  If yours does have the birth date 17 Sep 1882 then back to getting the certificate I'm afraid for the Gammon birth to see if the birth dates match.  I'm betting they do!

Tracing what happened to potential mother Ellen Gammon is another avenue.  There was one that married around 1888 I think but Arthur isn't with her in 1891 - maybe he had already been "adopted" by the Gibbs family  :-\

Certainly haven't got all the answers yet just thinking aloud.
