Henry Greenwood born 1853, Ancoats, Manchester.
« on: Sunday 02 June 19 12:01 BST (UK) »
Henry Greenwood was born 19th August 1853 at 114 Butler Street, Ancoats, Manchester.  Same address as the Residence of Informant, his mother Mary Greenwood.  No father's name given.  I have the birth certificate.

On the 1861 census he is age 7, living with his grandmother Fanny Greenwood 68, mother Mary Greenwood 26, and cousin Joseph Smith 2 at Downith Lane, Charlesworth, Derbyshire.

On the 1871 census he is age 16, living with his mother Mary Ferneley 34, stepfather Edward Ferneley 32, and half brother James Ferneley age 1, in Glossop.

After that, I am not certain and it is just guesswork.  Up to the 1871 census I am sure I have the right person.  I think I found him in Ashton under Lyne.

Mary Greenwood married Edward Fearnley in 1861 at Manchester St Jude. Her maiden name was possibly Garger according to lancsbmd or Gargen according to Civil marriage records.

Thanks.  I should have filled in all this detail, I know his mother Mary Greenwood married Henry Geoghan, who died and then she married Edward Ferneley.  Neither were Henry's father, she married Henry Geoghan after Henry her son was born, though he might have been the father, but he wasn't named on the birth certificate.

I have researched his mother Mary Greenwood fairly thoroughly, her birth, two marriages, two sons, Henry Greenwood and James Ferneley, and death.  I am fairly certain of her son Henry up to the 1871 census, but can't trace him after that, though he may be somebody who settled in Ashton under Lyne.

Yes, that is Henry's mother, Mary Greenwood.

It is possible that Henry Geoghan was her son's father, but he wasn't on the birth certificate.  Any descendants of the son Henry Greenwood would want to trace his father as well as his mother, so that would be relevant to them.  (Good luck with that, I couldn't find out anything about Henry Geoghan.  I think I read that he was born in Ireland).

Thanks.  That was the one I was wondering about.  I suppose I need the marriage certificate to try to prove it is the same Henry Greenwood.

Thanks for those GRO references, I might have the death details slightly wrong, I have April 1911 in Glossop, birth date about 1852.  I will check the GRO.
