Piotr Idelt
« on: Monday 03 June 19 16:56 BST (UK) »
Hello,

Looking for information about Piotr Idelt, b. Nov. 10, 1896 in Zawada, Poland, and died in Peterborough, England, 1970. He was in displaced persons camp in Niederlahnstein, Germany, until late 1947 or early 1948, when he emigrated to England. The only record I've found on him is a death record, but wondering if anyone might have more information about him or possibly relatives.

Thank you!

At least it has narrowed down the location to the old Poznan in Germany as there seem to be a number of Zawada's (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zawada;D
Unfortunately there could still be some ambiguity: https://s.meyersgaz.org/search?search=zawada  >:(

However, he went to school in Rawicz. I believe this used to be "Rawitsch" (https://www.meyersgaz.org/place/20556064). And yes, there is a "Zawada" in this area (https://www.meyersgaz.org/place/21214085) so I suppose that this is the best place to focus on for now.

Could this be him?:
Verlustlisten 1. Weltkrieg (1918-08-02)- Zawade, Gostyn Preußen 1205 Seite 25410
Idelt, Peter – 10.11. Zawade, Gostyn – leicht verwundet”

Hi TreeSpirit,

Wow, thanks for your research into this! Yes, I had found the files through the ITS, actually, while researching my grandmother, who is also named in his petition for emigration (Oleksiuk). She was 7 months pregnant with my father at the time, so I suspect Idelt is my grandfather (she had once said his name was "Peter"--the only clue she gave to his identity). Those docs say they were engaged, but he left for England and she didn't for some reason. I also have  an inquiry into ITS for whatever other files they have, but I know they take some time.

--I had no idea about Old Poznan or even what that was before now, but this is making more sense, especially since he says he spent his elementary school years in Germany. This might then suggest that he might have actually been German by nationality (though he lists himself as Polish on ITS records?). Could that be? (I am just learning, so pls. forgive my ignorance). It seemed odd he was educated in both countries, but maybe not?

“Idelt, Peter – 10.11. Zawade, Gostyn – leicht verwundet”. May I ask where you found this and do you know what it means? It's all terra incognita to me.

Thank you so much for your help with this--I am very grateful.

Oh, just ran Entry #3 through Google translator: so he was soldier, slightly wounded, for German military?

The WW1 casualty lists can be found in a few sites. Ancestry is one and http://des.genealogy.net/eingabe-verlustlisten/search/index is another option. Peter was only wounded but it seems as if his "brother" Thomas might have been killed in WW1 because look what I found:

Parents: Constantinus Idelt X Marianna Kendziora
-
Children:
Thomas - Gostyń (Registry office) - birth record, year 1890, [Księga urodzeń]
Josepha - Poniec (par. rzymskokatolicka) - birth/baptism record, year 1895 , wpis nr 43,
Petrus - Poniec (par. rzymskokatolicka) - birth/baptism record, year 1896 , wpis nr 181,
Michael - Poniec (par. rzymskokatolicka) - birth/baptism record, year 1898 , wpis nr 92
(source: http://www.basia.famula.pl/en/  - after entering the surname select the Gostyn-Poniec option .. Gostyn was the area mentioned in “Peter’s” casualty reference)

Note: There is a Zawada only 2 k’s from Poniec (German: Punitz). It’s the same one that I had previously picked as the best option ( https://www.meyersgaz.org/place/21214085 )

PS I realised there was another daughter Maria in 1900 under the Włoszakowice option

I’d already found a “Poznan City - Citizen Registration Card (1870-1931)” for an Antonia Idelt b abt 1907 in Piskornia (https://www.meyersgaz.org/place/20482048).
The “rodzice” (parents) could be the same parents as above i.e. she could be another sister.
