how to get reserected on Ancestry tree
« on: Monday 03 June 19 19:22 BST (UK) »
Hi
My friend is shown on a tree on Ancestry as having died in 2004, but he is very much alive.  The tree in question includes a number of big errors and we are uncertain as to whether the person is truly related to my friend.  Is it possible to get the death date removed and my friend made 'private' on the tree or is the only option to contact the tree owner and hope they will correct their tree?
Mary

Just ignore the other tree!
Give a man a record and you feed him for a day.
Teach a man to research, and you feed him for a lifetime.

I would  but don't want my friend showing up publicly as having died.

You can try contacting Ancestry but probably their advice would be to contact the tree owner in any case. I would do this first and then if the tree owner refuses or does not reply etc, then I'd contact Ancestry second. In the cases of people further back I don't think they've been very helpful, but if your friend has a complaint about his own details being made public then you might have more of a footing to ask them to do something. I'm not actually sure that Anc can edit other people's trees. They may simply say "whoops, can't help you there" but you won't know unless you ask.

Yes i'm rather afraid that may be the case.  But there really should be a way of objecting if you are being shown publicly and you are still alive.  I won't go into details but this tree/person has caused quite an upset and then I found this death entry as well.

Isnt there the option to add comments to a person on somebody else's tree?

In which case you could add something acerbic to the fact that this person is very much alive.

Thank you, I didn't know that.  Have now found it and left a comment, hopefully that will do the job.

I wouldn't worry about it.  Intelligent users of Ancestry are aware that there is plenty of misinfo there, while the other users aren't worried whether it's right anyway  :D  It's hardly as 'public' as the rubbish tweeted by D*na*ld Tr*mp and others.
