Marriage in Hong-Kong or Canton or ?
« on: Tuesday 04 June 19 04:38 BST (UK) »
George Stacey Kennedy-Skipton (born England) married Helen Tow (born USA). They married 23 August 1923. His occupation Civil Servant based in Hong Kong, hers a Quaker Missionary with mission based in Canton. Burkes Irish Nobility has the marriage date but no place published. Would they have a notice in the Hong Kong newspaper? Some of their daughters were baptized at St. John's, Hong Kong but I cannot find their marriage place. He escaped from Hong Kong during the war then returned to Hong Kong. She and her two surviving daughters went to England after the war.

From the Cedar Rapids Gazette, Iowa, USA Newspaper 29 July 1935. Helen (Tow) Kennedy-Skipton was born in Iowa so that newspaper takes an interest in her and her husband.

"Mr Skipton is a British Government Official who met and fell in love with Miss (Helen) Tow when he was sent on a business trip to Canton where she was missionary".

I am leaning towards the marriage possibly in Canton. The bride was based there (and probably all her missionary friends).  The Brides residence and not the Groom is normally the marriage place.

Now the hard part. Are there any records for marriages in Canton? Or even just an index as the actual date has been published.

This is all I can find on Find my Past

Passenger Lists Leaving UK 1890-1960 -
Hong Kong, China Kennedy-Skipton

Having travelled myself from time to time on the Clapham Omnibus I am going to assume the he married in Canton. Unless I can prove otherwise.

1943: The 45 year old George Stacey Kennedy-Skipton escapes from Hong-Kong and sails from Bombay to England on the Cunard White Star liner Britannic. He arrives in Liverpool 7 November 1943. A First Class passenger with address given as C/O Colonial Office, London. Wife and two Daughters remain in Hong Kong. Too much risk involved in trying to get them out too.
