Hi All

I've been on and off researching my family history for the last 10 years via ancestry and findmypast along with some other sites, however, I'm re hashing my tree and I am at the point where I have started to order certificates to confirm my research and I've hit my first problem with my starting family member, although I always knew she was going to be a tricky one.

My great Grandmother was an illegitimate child herself, who married pre 1920 had 3 children, then the marriage clearly broke down, she then had a 4th child my grandfather who was illegitimate himself and I believe her husband re married and had another child, my great grandmother then had a 5th child with another man who's own history is difficult to trace, she is noted on her 5th child's birth records as being the mother but the family have always been told she was adopted, her death certificate and 1939 register both show my great grandmothers last name to have changed to the same as the 5th child along with her new husband, however i can find no divorce records or 2nd marriage records?

Where do I start? I assume because of the date Divorce may have been hard to acquire, perhaps the shame of another illegitimate child was too much and she just took on the last name? Family whispers suggest that she was a lady of the night to help feed her children when she became a single mother?

Welcome to Rootschat :)

I'd say this - don't assume anything.  Are you prepared to share the relevant names, dates, places (of deceased individuals only) and identify exactly where your knowledge gaps are?  If so there will be many Rootchatters ready to have a look and suggest ideas.

On your specific points, in family history generally you'll find:

 - Bigamy - not all that uncommon.  Sometimes covert/dishonest, sometimes just convenient.

 - Taking on surname without marriage & presenting as husband and wife - far from uncommon, either because one or both wasn't free (or willing) to marry or just not getting around to marriage.

 - "Lady of the night" - almost certainly commoner than we think, but almost impossible to document except in certain census entries when such a lady's profession is sometimes explicitly or euphemistically listed.  For women facing destitution there may have been no real option other than to do this from time to time - I suspect most of those would not have regarded it as their occupation.

And a warm welcome to Rootschat from me.

My first question is: in which country did the events happen?  There are various free sites which can be as good or better than paysites to start with.

My second question is: what are the names of the people and the earliest definitive proof you have (such as birth baptism or marriage record)?

I imagine that you might not want Rootschatters to take over the research, but we don't tend to do that - we can dig around for leads which you can follow up, and tell you about useful websites you may not yet have discovered.

The only advice I would add to avm228's post (other than for you to enjoy the fascinating journey!) is to get as much free information as you can before spending on subscriptions or certificates.

Reginald seems to have got together with Dorothy May Gibbons born 28 Feb 1910 Stroud - is that your understanding?

She died as Dorothy May Clark, Sep 1996 Poole.

Are you sure he is theirs?  Looks to be as though he may be a nephew.
