SHEPHERDSON, assistance with searching please
« on: Friday 07 June 19 09:06 BST (UK) »
Seeking evidence of the following SHEPHERDSON family on the 1851 census (is a serious transcription/spelling error preventing me from finding them?)

LOST:
Christopher Shepherdson, age '35' on 1841 census, born Yorkshire, stone mason;
Mary Shepherdson (nee Sedgwick, 1st marriage was to Spurr), age '40' on 1841 census, born Sheffield;

  and the children of this couple, all born Sheffield:

Benjamin Shepherdson bapt. 1826 Sheffield
Emma Shepherdson c. 1827
William Shepherdson c. 1832 - 1874
Christopher Shepherdson c. 1835
Mary Shepherdson bapt. 1838 Sheffield.

Further details: son William Shepherdson (got married 1853 in Manchester to Sarah) is findable in Manchester on the 1861, a stone mason.

In 1841 the family is together in Wath upon Dearne (Swinton), north of Sheffield.

The spellings of the surname are fluid e.g. I've seen Shepardson, Shepheardson, Sheppardson, and William's 1853 marriage is wrongly recorded as Sheffordson.

BUT: What happened to the father & mother Christopher + Mary Shepherdson?
Is the whole family still together somewhere in 1851?
Did the parents go to Manchester along with the children, or did they stay in Sheffield? I can't find any evidence of this couple after 1841.

Thank you for your sharp eyes.

William’s marriage in 1851 is recorded as ‘Shefferdson’ as you say.
He made his mark rather than sign his name.
I wonder then who pronounced ‘ph’ as ‘f’ , rather than ‘p’ ‘h’ as in Shepherd. Was it Christopher?
That said, however, I can’t see the family as Shefferdson either other than the baptism of William’sn, also William.

Additionally, much of the 1851 Manchester census was damaged. Some has been saved and published digitally but there is a chance William or the rest of the family may be lost, if they were in Manchester by 1851.

How do you know they were born Sheffield?  The 1841 only confirms they were born in Yorkshire

Is William the only child you have traced forward?
You don’t mention Henry also age 15 in the 1841
currently concentrating on NUTCHER & MARSHALL families, Hampshire.

In your previous thread you mention the marriage of Robert Spurr to Mary Sedgwick. Are there two Mary Sedgwicks?
You also are looking for Henry Spurr born 1825/6. Is he Henry Shepherdson in 1841?

The Shepherdson/Spurr marriage was in Barnsley 1823.

Just an addition, a witness to theShepherdson/Spurr marriage was Thomas Sedgwick.

Hi, and thank you.
I don't mention the "Henry age 15" because I'm (almost) certain this is Mary's son Henry from a previous marriage, not a child of Christopher + Mary. (I could be wrong).

Mary Sedgwick (dau. of Thomas) married Robert Spurr, Sheffield 1816. This Robert Spurr aged 25 was (I now know) transported to Oz/Tasmania, convicted York 1821. See convict ship registers, court records, lots of evidence for 'Robert Spurr carpenter, Sheffield'.

I wrote 'Sheffield' because William Shepherdson gives 'Sheffield' as his birthplace on the 1861, and also Benjamin and Mary Shepherdson show up in the baptisms at Sheffield Cathedral.

But I don't have any evidence for Christopher Shepherdson apart from "Yorkshire", so I need to correct that.

William Shepherdson is the only child I've managed to trace forward, and I've traced some of his descendants too (stone masons, Manchester mainly) - but I can't find facts for his siblings nor his parents.
