Article in the Shields Daily News 24 May 1938 on his retirement briefly outlines his career. If you sign up to the newspaper archive you receive three free articles.

(Found the above by searching for Wilkinson harbourmaster in Northumberland papers -  nb Blyth is in Northumberland not Durham).

Harbourmaster To Retire

AWARDED O.B.E. FOR WAR SERVICES

Captain R.T. Wilkinson, Blyth harbour master for 25 years, is to retire at the end of this  month.

Apprenticed in the old sailing brigs Captain Wilkinson has had an adventurous career, and he was awarded the O.B.E. for his services as chief examination officer and King’s harbour master at Blyth during the war.
Captain Wilkinson’s first shore appointment was as deputy dock master for the L.N.E.R. at West Hartlepool, a position he held for a period of eleven years. During 1911 he became head dock master at Tyne Dock and in two years he was appointed harbour master at Blyth.
During the war, as chief examination officer and King’s harbour master, many of his experiences were in connection with secret service. He also did much salvage work off the northumberland Coast.
Captain Wilkinson has been an official of the Missions of Seamen and also of the Royal National Lifeboat Institute. He is also keenly interested in sport.
During his retirement he will reside in Pipsham, Lancashire.
On Friday night Captain Wilkinson was the recipient of a cut glass decanter and cut glass jug, the gifts of the Blyth pilots.
The presentation was made by Captain H. Dunn, senior pilot.

(article is likely to have been in a few North East newspaper, including the Shields one that William posted about)

There are many mentions of him in newspaper reports over the years.

Quote
During his retirement he will reside in Pipsham, Lancashire.

It actually says "Pispham" - which I'm guessing is Bispham in Blackpool.

Another report on his retirement says that he was going to live in the West of England.

Apologies, I typed that incorrectly.

There is no family info to suggest that he lived in the South West. We do know that he retired to Bispham and that his also where he passed away.

I have found that British Newspaper Archives are missing so many newspapers and though I have requested - many years ago that some of the missing papers be added and they have promised to digitise them - it still hasn't happened.

When I visited the Newspaper Library in Colindale in the 1980's they had everything including Stockton and Teeside, and Consett local papers and they were so quick and efficient to produce the required micro-fiches.

Unfortunately Colindale closed around 2013 and for some time the collection was moved to Boston Spa.   Today I believe it is all available again at the British Library rooms a St. Pancras. - https://www.bl.uk/visit/reading-rooms/newsroom

Consequently I would recommend when all else fails with the Newspaper Archives, that the full collection at St.Pancras be searched for answers.    For those of us who can't get to London, perhaps there is some kind soul who might be able to look them up for us?

Another option is the local library who often have copies of old newspapers as does the Durham County Records Office where I also found the articles missing from British Newspaper Archives.

What is really ironic is that Papers Past New Zealand even have copies of the missing UK newspapers and they can be worth a search.
