Mellis St Mary Parish Registers - EMERSON
« on: Saturday 08 June 19 07:13 BST (UK) »
I have been looking for the baptism of my 5xG-Grandmother Sarah EMERSON and her siblings. I have dates and a possible location and wondered whether some wonderful person could check for me.
The location is St Mary Mellis parish registers.
The Baptisms are:
Sarah Emerson d/o Henry & Amy, 21 Jan 1732/3
Mary Emerson d/o Henry & Amy, 14 Dec 1735
Henry Emerson s/o Henry & Amy, 25 Dec 1737
Mary Emerson d/o Henry & Amy, 19 Mar 1738/9

Thanks to anyone who take the time to read this,

Hello Sue in Australia

Have just looked at the stuff I have for Mellis & surrounding parishes - no bpts unfortunately but my records only go back to 1750 or thereabouts.  However it looks like Henry & Amy may have been buried in the neighbouring parish of Gislingham & there are Emerson marriages in that parish. A Sarah Emerson married Henry Keen of Wetheringsett 25 Dec 1760 in Gislingham, is this your Sarah?

If it is & anyone is able to check back further it may be worth looking at the Gislingham registers as well. Next nearest parish showing any early Em(m)erson burials in the info I have is Eye about 3 miles east of Mellis.

Sorry for the delay and thanks for taking the time to respond.

I have already posted requesting information about the Gislingham registers (as both Sarah and her sister Mary were married there) and you replied that there were just the 2 burials in the SFHS burial index who are probably Sarah's parents.

I found a "family tree" for the Emersons on the "Find A Grave" site which suggests that Sarah was baptised in Mellis and the later children at undefined locations, so I thought a new post was worth a try.

Thanks for the response,

Sue

Hi all,
Thanks for reading the post and for those who helped.
I finally had time off on a day when a nearby Family History Centre was open and was able to look at the digitised films of the Partridge transcripts of the Mellis & Gislingham registers.
I was able to find the following entries:
Mellis St Mary
1732/3, Jan 21, Sarah Daughter of Henry & Amy Annison
Gislingham St Mary
1735, Dec 14, Mary ye daughter of Henry & Amye Emmerson
1737, Dec 25, Henry ye son of Henry & Amey Emmerson
1738/9, Mar 19, Mary ye daughter of Henery & Emme Emmerson

There is no entry for a Sarah Emmerson (or anything like it) in Partridge's Gislingham transcripts and Annison is visually close to Amison. I will need to get a sight of the original to confirm the actual surname.

My problem solved and hopefull a help for someone else.

Thanks again,
Sue

The largest amount of E(m)mersons seem to come from County Durham. Nothing to tie the Durham and the Suffolk ones together but unusual.
