Engineer travelling to and fro to Africa?

Hello!

I have a John Stockwell born in 1875 who i have found many travel records for going to and fro from Africa? Is there anyway i can find out what he was doing?

1919 - Received Mercantile Marine Ribbon
Dec 1920 - Liverpool to Nigeria on SS Benue - Occupation Engineer
July 1921 - Liverpool to Lagos on SS Akabo - Occupation Marine Engineer
Oct 1922 - Nigeria to Liverpool on SS Appam - Occupation Marine Engineer
Feb 1924 - Lagos to Liverpool on TMS Aba - Occupation Engineer
July 1924 - Liverpool to Lagos on TMS Aba - Occupation Engineer
Aug 1925 - Lagos to Liverpool on SS Appam - Occupation Engineer


I guessing her obviously was going out there too work but could anyone help me find out why? or point me in the right direction?

What was he doing out there? who was he working for? was the pay better than working in england?

Probably he was in the Merchant Navy - Mercantile Marine Ribbon 1919 (for service during WW1)  :-\

And he was an Engineer on board ship.
Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.

I think BumbleB is right.
There is a merchant Navy card with photo for a John Stockwell born Belfast 11.01.1875 could that be him?

Mentions in shipping news of the ships in newspapers seem to suggest they were Mail steamers to and fro from Africa.

Yes thats him! could you let me know where you have seen this card? cant seem to find one apart from the one on the national archives and that doesnt have a photo :(

sorry too sound dumb, i dont know much about merchant navy and mail ships but what did they do?

All those ships, and many others, were run by Elder Dempster, which operated from Liverpool.  It was also known as the British & African Steam Navigation Company.
It seems likely that he was an engineer officer aboard their vessels.
