Cannock Staffs - Union Workhouse
« on: Sunday 09 June 19 20:45 BST (UK) »
Hi - a relative ended their days in the Union Workhouse in Cannock in 1906. Does anybody know where such a person would be buried?

Thanks
M

There are various possibilities, it would depend on the circumstances. Was he a resident inmate, or simply a patient in the infirmary?  In either case he may have been buried in the local parish churchyard, or in his own parish, it is not an area I am familiar with, perhaps someone else may be able to come up with alternative suggestions.

Agree with Jebber.
Whether he was an inmate, or simply in the infirmary, family or friends may have taken the body to be buried at a cemetery/graveyard of their choosing.

If nobody took the body he may have been buried in the nearest such place.
Or even buried in a pauper's grave along with others.

Cannock Cemetery opened in 1882.
Nearby Rugeley Cemetery opened in 1884.

Cannock Workhouse was overseen by a Board of Guardians representing 21 parishes:
Acton and Bednall, Brewood, Bushbury, Cannock, Cheslyn Hay, Church Eaton, Coppenhall, Dunston, Essington, Featherstone,Hatherton, Hilton, Huntington, Kinvaston, Lapley and Wheaton Ashton, Norton, Penkridge, Saredon, Shareshill, Stretton, Great Wyrley.

Potentially he could have been buried in any one of these parishes.

For cemeteries you could run a check on Staffordshire Burial Indexes

No first names!
Surname
Cemetery
Quarter/Year

Grave Ref (with link to matching entries)

Thanks to everyone that responded!

I didn't realise the workhouse was a hospital and he was from Church Eaton. I didn't find his burial in the Staffordshire/BMSGH index but did find it on freereg.org.uk

I've asked on findagrave to see if anyone can locate the grave and any headstone at St Editha's churchyard in Church Eaton.

Once again a team effort yields results :)

Cheers, Martin.

An Infirmary, rather than a Hospital! ;D

There used to be a difference between the two - but darned if I know the difference!
