Birth lookup please, Manchester (Village) New York.
« on: Monday 10 June 19 18:30 BST (UK) »

For many years now I've been looking for a Birth or Baptismal Entry for my late Grandfather,

William James Wilson (1860 - 1937).

On the 1901 and 1911 Censuses for Wales, he says he was Born in 'Manchester'.

I've never been able to find him in Manchester, Lancashire...

Bit of a longshot, - but I wonder if anyone on here can see a Birth for him in Manchester (Village) New York?

Cheers, Romilly.

New York state didn't start statewide registration until 1881, so unlikely that such a record would exist.

There are lot of towns in the US named Manchester.

Thanks Shelley, - it was just a thought...

A sort of 'clutching at straws thought having tried everything else thought'!

Am guessing you don't have him before 1901?

Does he name a father when he gets married?

Could be his names are switched round or he has taken on a step fathers surname perhaps but am sure you have already looked into all that  :-\

Was he married to a Margaret?

Milliepede, - I can't find him anywhere at all before he Married my Grandmother Margaret Rees in Swansea on the 22nd June 1893...

On that Cert, William James Wilson gives his age as 32yrs, Batchelor,Occupation: House Painter. Father, 'William Wilson (Deceased) Occupation: Mason'.

I've never found a William Wilson with son William James Wilson on any of the UK Censuses.

Recently, I came across an old photo with 'American Cousins Visit Swansea' written on the back. This has made me think that some of the Wilson family must have been in the USA.

Over the years I've ordered many Birth Certs, - none of them match the info given on the Marriage Cert:-(

I have this Birth Cert Milliepede, but I don't think it's him.

Have you got Margaret in 1891 just in case he was already in that area and lodging nearby.

Yes, - Margaret Rees was In-Service at Northampton Villas, Swansea in 1891.

Her parents Evan and Margaret Rees are also in Swansea.

On the 1893 Marriage Cert, William James Wilson gives his Address as 'Lower Oxford Street, Swansea'.

I've been all through the 1891 Census for Swansea looking for him, and searched Lower Oxford Street manually, but he's not there. There is another William James Wilson, Born Kent 1865, but it's a different man. That one married Mary Shill.

He doesn't seem to exist prior to 1893:-(

Either he was out of the country/In the Services/Changed his name???
