« on: Monday 10 June 19 21:26 BST (UK) »
The 1861 bill for chimney sweeping describes John Kingston as "Chimney Sweeper and Soot Dealer".  What would the soot have been used for?
Godden in East Sussex, mainly Hastings area.
Richards in Lea, Gloucestershire, then London.
Williamson in Leith, Vickers in Nottingham.
Webb in Bildeston and Colchester.
Wesbroom in Kirby le Soken.
Ellington in Harwich.
Park, Palmer, Segar and Peartree in Kersey.

Rena, thank you for that link.

I knew soot had some value but didn't know why. Now I understand why the very short will of my chimney sweep great great grandfather was made just to leave his stock of soot to his son-in-law!

This was a bill for 5 for sweeping the dozens of chimneys of the Hull Charterhouse for a year.  Attached to it was a flier saying that prices would have to go up next year because the new law banning the sending of children up chimneys was coming into force.
