I don't see dead people

I've developed a decent size tree of 400 people using mostly census, marriage and birth data. I have  a reasonable level of confidence in the data by cross checking the parents of siblings, mothers maiden name and marriage records. However where i really struggle is killing people off. Online death records contain very little information and with a common family name (Smith) there are often 5-10 possibles for each person taking area and timeframe into account.   
Most of the people on one side of my tree don't have death dates.  While this isn't important for building a tree the completist in me would like to do  better. Can people suggest tips for online verification of deaths ?  - i'm currently living  outside the UK and use FindMyPast.

Seeing the monumental inscriptions can help to identify the correct person. Try the photographic sites such as Findagrave and Billiongraves.

Probate Records are also a useful way of checking individuals - full name and address at death and date of death. Not everybody appears in the records, but a surprisingly high number do. Ancestry has them online.

Burial/cremation records can be useful, especially when there is no monument. They often contain address of deceased, name of person organising cremation, others buried in the same plot, and so on.

Deceased Online is a good place to start. There are costs, but it's generally much cheaper than buying a speculative death certificate. Also check individual local authority web sites, some provide indexes.

If you don't have Ancestry access they are available free from the original indexes from the probate office that Ancestry links to .

I didn't know about Deceased Online.... not just UK, coverage index shows also Cyprus, Egypt, Malta & Singapore.
