Can I find out anything more about this 1872 West Bromwich death?
« on: Wednesday 12 June 19 14:30 BST (UK) »
I see that an inquest was held for the death of James Lions (last name more often spelled Lyons or Lines), age 12, who died from "two iron plates falling upon him" on May 16, 1872 in West Bromwich, Staffordshire.

Is there any way I can find out anything more about this death?

It may well have been reported in a local newspaper.  Not sure about inquest reports for that area but am sure someone will know and advise further.

Unfortunately nothing in the newspapers available via FindMyPast  :'(
Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.

Thank you for checking for me. Did you look under the different surname spellings? I couldn't find anything on Newspapers.com, either. I wonder what could have happened. I assume it must have been a workplace accident.

One odd thing is I found the confirmation records for West Bromwich from later that year and his name is on it. They only did Catholic confirmations every few years there. His brother was also on the list. I am sure it is him (no one else by that name in that town in the same 5-10 year age range), but he was already dead on the date on the confirmation record.

I only looked for the spelling on the certificate.

I had one like this who died in a mining accident aged 12,Staffordshire.i contacted Stafford records office and they found the inquest for me.But West Bromwich records come under Sandwell archives, which are at Smethwick. They would probably have the burial record as well.My husbands 3rdgt/gf was killed in a mining accident, they had lots of details, including the burial records, cemetary they were buried, and they are really helpful,so i would contact them if i was you.

Sandwell archives have local newspapers on film. West Bromwich Chronicle is one.
