Hi everyone,

I've recently started researching my family tree, the Strang family from around Clydebank. I can go back to my great grandfather (John Strang, died 1909) via my grandfather (Septimus Millar Strang (1889-1962) and my father Robert Millar Strang (1923-1974).

I have a question regarding one of my grandfather's brothers William Alexander Strang born 1878. He appears in the 1881 census aged 3, then again in the 1901 census aged 23 (but at a different address) - however I can't see hin in the 1891 census.

All the above are found via https://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/

I will keep looking!

If anyone else is looking in to Strang family members I'd be happy to pass on my findings.

Regards,
John Strang

Hi John ,
Welcome to Rootschat  :)

Have you eliminated the William M Strang aged 13 at Old Kilpatrick, Dunbartonshire?
According to FamilySearch website this boy was born in Renfrewshire .
I know, it's the wrong middle initial but perhaps an error was made - either by William or whoever provided info for the Census.

Looby :)

Welcome from me too!

I agree with Looby. The address in the  1891 census is the same as the one you found in 1901, Eskine Villa, Old Kirkpatrick. William is shown as nephew - looks like his aunt's maiden name was Strang and that she was his father's sister, Mary. Her married surname is transcribed as Harrie in 1891 and Harvie in 1901.

William
Dent (Haltwhistle and Sacriston), Bell and Jetson (Haltwhistle), Postle, Ward, Longstaff, Purvis, Manners, Parnaby and Hardy (Co. Durham), Kennedy and McRobert (Banffshire), Reid(Bathgate), Watson (Wemyss), Graham (Libberton), Sandilands (Carmichael), Munro (Dingwall)

Just to add a little about the aunt, Mary E Harvie.

She appears to have died in 1922 and left a will

Harvie Mary Erskine or Strang, Erskine Villa, Duntocher, Dunbartonshire, died 1 November 1922. Confirmation to James Risk Paterson, Rev James Hyslop, Walter Harvie, Robert Strang 15 Montrose Street, Ethel May Strang 15 Montrose Street and William Murdoch Hay.

There is an eik to confirmation in 1925 - the named executors are the same except Ethel May is now showing as Ethel May Strang or Keillar c/o Goodfish Lake, Post Office , Alberta, Canada.(Presumably now married).

Wills can be a great way of finding family relationships. Wills up to 1925 are available on Scotland's People.

Thank you all so much for such prompt replies!

loobylooayr - yes I had seen William M, but scotlandspeople shows him with a different reference in the 1891 census - he is under reference 501/ 5/ 1 but the other family members are all under reference 501/ 16/ 30 - which I took to mean he lived at a different address. Would that be likely?

Millmoor - interesting about the name Harvie. My great uncle Erskine has Harvie as his middle name, which he passed on to his son Robert Erskine Strang.

And thanks too for the information about Ethel May - I'd found her (possibly) as being born with surname Bowker - so maybe she was adopted?
What is also interesting is that my grandfather Septimus has the address 15 Montrose Street on his wedding certificate, to Edith Jane Calderhead on 10th June 1920. Coincidentally she comes from Montrose! I'm intrigued as to how they met  ;D

Col C - thanks Colin, I agree that could be him but possibly at a different address, as mentioned to loobyloo?

There's enough here to keep me occupied for a while - thanks again everyone!
