I cannot find the death record of my 2 x great grandfather Joseph Thompson. He was buried 23 July 1857 at All Saints, Skelton in Cleveland. The only record of a death for a Joseph Thompson is in Stockton  Sept Quarter 1857 bur GRO have the age as 0. I have asked GRO if there are any other deaths registered but they say no. Joseph as born in Skelton 1784/85. Can anyone offer any advice as to where to look for his death record

Maybe the death wasn't registered?
Registration wasn't compulsory back then ( or not enforced, anyway!) - many prople thought a church burial was sufficient.

I think, but can't find the evidence atm, that registration of a death within a few days was compulsory.  If a clergyman was asked to conduct a burial without a death certificate, he had to inform the registrar.  I think, but again can't prove, that there was a fine if things weren't done properly.

Reg district covering Skelton in Cleveland should be Guisborough, I think?

The church record gives his age as 72years abs place of abode Guisbro., so I am almost certain it is the correct death
