Mystery Gravestone needs miracle for Identification
« on: Friday 14 June 19 19:12 BST (UK) »
Hi

Not sure where exacrly to post, so thought I'd try here first.

I'm trying to identify a grave and graveyard from an old photo somewhere in North Wales, taken in the 1930's. I can't read the gravestone and I've tried to enhance it, withoout much luck. I haven't posted the image yet in case this is the wrong place to post it. Should I post it here to see if someone can work a miracle to allow any words to be made visible, or should I post it on the general Wales site, to see if someone can recognise the graveyard?

I'm not very optimistic about anyone being able to sucessfully enhance the image enough to allow reding any words, so would be grateful for any advice please since I don't want to end up duplicating posts.

Thanks

I'm trying to find the location of the graveyard and identity of the deceased whose grave is inside the rails.

I would be very grateful if someone could work miracles and either improve the quality of the image in some way (although I somehow doubt the gravestone can be improved enough to allow it to be read) or recognise the graveyard maybe from the profile of the hill in the background or even the church.

Thanks

Hi Sam
The image you have posted is 274 kbs, which means it 'pixalates' when you zoom in to see it more closely.
You are allowed to post up to 500 kbs here on Rootschat for any single image.
I presume you have scanned in this image.
It would be a good idea to play around with the scanning to see if you can get it nearer 500 kbs, as that would make it easier to see.
I'd agree though, it's fairly unlikely the grave stone will be ale to be deciphered, but you never know!
Good luck!

Hi Sam, to be in with a chance of reading the inscription it would be best if you could scan just the headstone area at a resolution of 600dpi and in colour mode.

Thanks for the update Sarah, I was unaware of the new file limit.

A very long shot, but the "atmosphere" of the photo reminds me of the cemetery in Mount Road,St.Asaph.I might be able to visit over the weekend.

Have you got the original photograph and a good Scanner

if so concentrate on scanning the gravestone in at 600 dpi

that may help

If it was Mount Road,St.Asaph,I would expect a belfry at the front apex, which I can't see but may be over-exposed or masked by the visitor's head. From the angle I'm imagining the Clwydian Hills would
be in the background.
