Thomas WILLIAMS: Born c1832, St James, London
« on: Saturday 15 June 19 10:35 BST (UK) »
Hello,

This request may prove "Mission Impossible".

I understand from correspondents in Australia that Thomas WILLIAMS was born c1832 in St. James, London, the son of Thomas WILLIAMS, a Sawyer, and his wife Isabella.   There are no other details regarding his parentage/siblings etc., including from sight of Australian family BDM Certificates, and as he was transported in 1849 little else to research in England.   Sadly, his criminal documentation only offers that when he was sentenced to 7 years transportation at the Old Bailey on 04/01/1847 he was shown to be a Ladies Boot and Shoe Maker.

If anyone can throw some light on his parentage/siblings I would be extremely grateful.

This message will not self-destruct after five seconds 8) ::)

For the moment, thank you

How about the 1841 census in England, have you looked for him and his parents there?

There may be possible siblings listed with them  :)

Thank You.

I ran through the innumerable 1841 Census and BDM entries for Thomas WILLIAMS using Ancestry, FindMyPast, FamilySearch et al, which only underpinned "Mission Impossible".

You mention a Family Tree but no referenced citation ???

Sadly, quite a few streets in St James Westminster are missing from the 1841 census, notably the area around Berwick Street that should be in HO107/735 or 736. Often causes problems.

Details can be found under the individual street-names here ...

Hello Milliepede,

Excellent research.............certainly the right person but some of the information relating to his life pre-transportation was probably written by Hans Christian ANDERSEN ;D   However, your research, particularly his age/date of birth cited by the Trees, reminds me about the lesson I keep forgetting, namely, that accuracy of records and transcriptions is always questionable.

Bookbox:   It seems the 1841 Census void you mention may be the culprit for my failure to find the family.

For the moment,

Hello,
Are you sure your Thomas was the one tried on 4th January 1847?

That Thomas appears to have been born 1830.  The summing up mentions that he had already committed a felony.

Find My Past has a Thomas Williams (born 1830) found guilty of larceny in 1846.  He was a ladies’ shoe and boot maker.

There’s a newspaper article which mentions that Thomas was apprenticed to Edward Hailes of Denton Street, Somers Town.
