Herman Muller arrived New York 1892
« on: Saturday 15 June 19 17:15 BST (UK) »
Hi,

Looking for help, please, to track down Herman Muller, age 31,  who arrived through Ellis Island on 22nd Jan 1892 on the Britannic sailing from Liverpool, England. His occupation was Hairdresser.

Herman was born in Germany but lived (for an undetermined length of time) in the UK.
He is recorded, as Hermann Muller on the 1891 England Census living in Paddington, London with his wife Jessie Muller.
He'd previously lived in Leith (Edinburgh), Scotland and Glasgow.
He had married his wife Jessie Helen Dorman in 1884 in Glasgow. Jessie's place of birth is given on the 1891 Census as Edinburgh - but in fact she was born in Leswalt, Wigtownshire, Scotland. His name on marriage registration is Miller.
When Herman sails to New York , he is alone. Jessie is not with him.

I can find no further record of Herman or Jessie in UK (of course, they could be hiding  ;D).

Can anyone assist please - I'd love to find out what happened to Herman and Jessie.

Thank you, Sandra.
Definitely worth considering. What was an Electro Typer (maybe a stupid question  :P)? Would it be a typist?

I need to find out who the mother of these children was. Herman and Jessie had been married in 1884 and as of 1891 I could find no births to them.

Sandra

Think I'm ruling this Herman Muller out.
I've found him and his family on the 1900 Census https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:MS3Y-FG4
His wife was called Gertrude. On this Census they both provide 1892 as the year of their immigration. They've had 6 children , 4 still living. Their eldest Frieda was born in Illinois in Dec 1892.
The Herman I'm seeking travelled alone in Jan 1892 and would need to have been a quick mover to become a father by the end of the year - not impossible I know - but I'm wondering if this couple emigrated as a married couple.

The search goes on.

Thank you, oldohiohome .
Electrotyping sounds very specialised. Confirms my belief that the Herman Muller in Chicago is not the man I'm looking for. Herman was a hairdresser. Careers can be changed, of course. But it seems unlikely to me.

I know, the Britannia arrived at New York - but how do you know New York was Herman Muller's destination?

The last few columns of the manifest

Destination: New York. other people said other cities, so he wasn't referring to the port of entry.
He could read and write, carried 1 bag, sailed in the fore part of the boat, intended a prolonged sojourn.

Thank you for your reply. I must look at the document again - I never noticed that column: :) Or the "intended a prolonged sojourn" . I wonder if he stayed in US ?

Pretty illusive if he stayed in New York or else where.  Could have returned to UK or Germany before 1901 US census  :-\ Couldn't see anything on UK return passenger lists to fit him.
