Hi Anne

I'm intrigued by the area circled here ... looks like it has text that has been obliterated in some way, ???  or perhaps more recently added?

cheers

Paul

Hi Anne,
It looks like there are four names , but I can only read one of them, the second to last. I think the name is Michael Christopher Fitzgerald, but the "i" in Michael looks more like an "o" ( might be an illusion caused by moss) The next line is the date of death,  I can only make out July 1852(or the 8 could be a 9 and the 5 could be a 3). Next line is age, but the numbers are covered by the yellow stain.
I can't read the first two names, but the death date of the second from the top looks like 1842.
Yes, there is what appears to be a fourth name in the area
circled. I thought that it was more recent and so had not accumulated dirt or moss in the letters. I never thought that someone might have tried to obliterate it, I think more likely tried to clean it. Either way, it is impossible to read.
Hope someone else can do better at reading it.

Cheers,
Carmela

Where was the picture taken?  Would probably be much easier to get someone to go and look at it.  From a different angle it might be quite clear.

The carving into the the top of the stone looks like initials, maybe INS or IHS?  Do you have any 'S's' with Fitzgerald in-laws perhaps?

The IHS initials at the top of the Headstone is northing to do with the family details, it stands for the firs three letters of JESUS and is a well known Christian symbol.

Some inscriptions were inlaid with lead with tends to fall out.  It may be that this part of the gravestone was added later but the lead didn't stick so well.  I've seen piles of these letters on gravestones - great if you're good at Scrabble but not so good for family history.

I forgot to state that the IHS is a Latin inscription.  Also perhaps someone (or  Family History Society) may have recorded the Monumental Inscriptions for this graveyard.  Why not see if anyone on RootChat knows if this has been done?
