Parvin-Hague Divorce
« on: Saturday 15 June 19 21:58 BST (UK) »
Hi:  I'm trying to find out whether there was a divorce between Lancelot (Launcelot) Parvin and Margaret Hague.  The following lays out the census records over a 20 year period.

They were together for the 1881 census.

Margaret - 1891 Head of Household with her four children; 1901 Head of Household with youngest daughter.

Lancelot - 1901 Boarder; 1911 Widower (I have Margaret died in 1908) so this would be correct.

I found that back in 1891, the divorce status was rarely recorded because there was no category for divorce as such.

I tried to find a record of a divorce on the England Civil Registration site, but no success.  Does anyone know where I can prove (or disprove) that they were divorced before the 1891 census?  Any help or direction will be greatly appreciated.
Ireland, Scotland, England, United States, Germany, Australia.

In both 1891 & 1901 she has M in the status column.
In 1901 wife has been crossed out in the relation to head column, and Head replaces it.

So, no, I don’t think they were divorced.

What makes you think they divorced - beyond their not being together on two censuses which are snapshots only of two nights?

Lancelot's occupation as organ builder would be likely to take him away from home on projects

I have a couple in my tree who I assumed had split up as I found no evidence of their being together between 1891 and his death in 1929 - until a recent discovery of a newspaper article referring to them together as pillars of their local community who were giving them a big send off to his next doctoring post overseas

Divorce was uncommon. Grounds for divorce were limited, more so for women. There is information about divorce on National Archives Discovery website.

When  looking for a possible divorce on NA -input the forename/surname and J77.
It works (within reason).

Here is the link to the divorce guide:

I'm not sure what you mean by "English Civil Registration site" but assume that is just for births, marriages and deaths and there would be no records of divorce.

N.B. Sister Jane was baptised same day. It was Lancelot's 2nd baptism ceremony, 1st was private on 27th May.
Parents married at St. Mary the Virgin, Bury, 10th Jan. 1836. William was an organ builder. (Lancashire Online Parish Clerks)
I'd like to know which churches he and Lancelot built organs for and where Lancelot got his name.
