Possible Adoption/Foster - William George Jones
« on: Sunday 16 June 19 17:04 BST (UK) »
Hi,

Not sure where to start.  My grandmother had several siblings she didn't even know.  She herself was taken to a childrens's home in 1912 and was later fostered.  She died in 1985.  I have recently found out she had a brother  born in 1913 in Marylebone- William George Jones born 30th May.

I have traced all her other siblings but unable to find anything about William.  There appears to be no death record and cannot find him on the 1939 Register.  I assume he must have been put into a children's home, been sent overseas or fostered.

Any ideas would be gratefully received.

Thanks

Can you give us a bit more info - for example who was their mother (and father, if known)?  I have found a Willie Jones of not quite the right age being admitted to the workhouse from Marylebone, but given how common the name more would help rule people in or out

What was the name of your grandmother - maybe by tracing her we can find him?

His mother was a little economical with the truth.  She has her name down as Mabel O'Callan and the father as  George? Jones (trying to find the certificate at the moment) which is not the same Jones named  on the next child's birth certificate.  She definitely did not keep William with her.

Also, my grandmother was fostered by a family quite soon after 1912 so apart from a DNA connection between her and William there was no knowledge of each other.

Was mum Mabel Beatrice Callan b 1887 West Ham, later “married” to George Self(e)?  I wondered whether the name George appearing in connection with William’s birth might hint at George Self(e) as the natural father, but since he was in the army in South Africa at the time of conception in 1912 (only being posted back “home” on 31 December 1912) the dates don’t appear to work for a 30 May 1913 birth.

Who was the stated father of Mabel’s earlier children - was it John Joseph Jones, a married man local to her in West Ham, as an online tree suggests?  And Molly b 1915?

Do you mean you have discovered the connection through DNA genealogy?  If so, have you asked the living descendant who shows up as a match where he turns up in their family?
