Marriage of John Rosewarne and Henrietta
« on: Monday 17 June 19 05:51 BST (UK) »
In 1919, the police in Seattle were looking to apprehend a woman known as Mrs. John Rosewarne [also known as Mrs. H. Drath] for manslaughter in connection with a botched abortion.  Mrs. Rosewarne and her husband John were believed to have escaped across the border to Canada.

In the 1930 census, there is a John Rosewarne with wife Henrietta in Alaska.  I believe this Henrietta Rosewarne died in Washington in 1947.  I note that she was a nurse.

I suspect that John Rosewarne may have been the fugitive husband of my grandmother's sister - his age, birthplace and immigration date on the Alaska census are approximately correct.  He was censused with his family in Seattle in 1920 but thereafter disappeared until his death in Los Angeles in 1944.

What I am looking for is a record of John Rosewarne marrying Henrietta Riehe [or Drath? or maybe some other surname?] in order to determine whether he was, in fact, the John Rosewarne who was married to my grandmother's sister. If he was, it was probably a bigamous marriage.

You have probably done this, but at https://www.digitalarchives.wa.gov/

there are 10 Rosewarnes but none named John.
There is no Henrietta Riehe.
There are 600+ Henriettas from 1900 to 1930. I didn't check through them.

---------
Marriage of:
Henrietta Drath to Samuel E Espejo 26 August 1911, Snohomish County.

She was of King County, WA when married. witnesses: Mae Parkhurst and Dora Philp. married by William [C or E] Randall, a minister of the Gospel. She could sign her own name. no other information.

There was no Henrietta Espejo marriage or death on those records.

... his death in Los Angeles in 1944.

Does the informant on his death record--V L Rosewarne, of 2141 Parker Place, Bremerton, Washington--help any?

Yes, I saw that Drath/Espejo marriage but it didn't lead me anywhere - at least not yet.

As for the informant, V.L. Rosewarne, that is a bit puzzling.  I have concluded that it must have been a typo.  John Vincent Rosewarne's son Donald L. Rosewarne lived in Chico, Kitsap County, Washington [a couple of miles north of Bremerton] in 1940 and in Bremerton itself in 1948.  I think he was the informant.

John Vincent Rosewarne may have lived for awhile in Bremerton himself.  The 1932 Bremerton City Directory includes a "Rosewarne, John, Poulsbo Rt. 1."  HOWEVER, John Vincent Rosewarne had a son named J.V. Rosewarne, Jr.  It is possible, but not likely, that the Rosewarne in Bremerton in 1932 was the son.  Not likely because 1) Junior changed his surname to Rosewaine before 1932 and 2) Junior was a career naval officer and was stationed on the East Coast from about 1928 to 1930 and thereafter in San Diego and China.

Do you have the obit of Henrietta? 1947

http://nl.newsbank.com/nl-search/we/Archives/?p_product=HA-SE&p_theme=histpaper&p_action=keyword

If not, maybe you could request it of rootschat.  There may be hidden tidbits in it for you to follow.

John Vincent Rosewarne's obit can be found in the same paper in 1944

Yes, I sent for both obituaries but they don't really confirm or refute a marriage between John Rosewarne, the sometime clergyman, and Henrietta Rosewarne, the nurse.  John's obituary is especially sketchy about his life after 1912ish.

I have suspected for some time that the John who married Henrietta was the one previously married to Minnie Logan.  I have never found any evidence that John divorced Minnie, however.  Finding the newspaper articles about the alleged manslaughter rekindled my interest in this question.  It would certainly provide a motive for skipping out to Alaska.

My grandmother's write up of her family history [done in 1944] does not shed any light, either.  While she made it pretty clear that she didn't much like John Rosewarne, she was constrained in her commentary by the existence of living nieces and nephews.

There was a John Rosewarne arrested in Oakland on a felony warrant in 1922.  Not sure if there's more than one potential criminal with that name.  The article refers to Chico, which I would have thought was Chico, California, but maybe Chico, Washington?

Thanks, shellyesq.  Could you summarize what the article says because for me it is "Access denied.  This content is unavailable in your country."

"WANTED IN CHICO

John Rosewarne was arrested at Thirteenth and Franklin streets by Police Inspectors B.A. Wallman and Tim Flynn on a felony warrant from Chico.  The warrant was forwarded to this city by Constable J.W. Benner.  Rosewarne has been residing at 1524 Twenty-fourth avenue.  The warrant did not state what he was wanted for."

I see other references to Constable J.W. Benner in California newspapers, so seems like it was Chico, California.

Thanks.  In 1922, it could have been the son, John Vincent, Jr., who was in trouble in California.  He had enlisted in the Marine Corps on 11 September 1920 and shipped out on the USS Great Northern to Santo Domingo in September 1921.  It was subsequently discovered that he was under age and on 5 March 1922 he "arrived within continental limits US via USS Henderson.  15-SO Messman.  31 March, discharged by reason of underage enlistment, authority MGO letter #167137 AC-63-ct dated 5 Jan 22.  Awarded character EXCELLENT."
