In particular check the paragraph headed "Pinpointing the birthplace".

Hello Jerry, and welcome from me too.

Just checking that Dorothea's husband was actually Gottfried (Godfrey) WARNER born c1807 Germany? The census records from the US, with children Hannah, Mary , Dorothy, Margaret, Sarah, Lydia, Louisa, Maria and Solomon all have father Gottried (Godfrey).

Do you have their marriage details, I'm wondering how you know Dorothea's maiden name?

Back to your question re Alsace Lorraine, I also have ancestors from there and have found it very difficult to date - especially as it changed from French to German occupation and back a few times. I'll dig out my research and see if I can find the useful site I used for some searches.  :)

Maddy,
Good to hear from you.  Yes, I am aware that Godfrey was the anglicized version of Gottfried.  I have seen that on some family trees.

You wondered how I came to know of Dorothea's maiden name.  I believe it came via her daughter's (my grandmother) death certificate that she filled out in Tullahoma, TN in 1915.  The death certificate gave names and birthplace/country of origin of her parents.  I am descended from their daughter Sarah.

I saw where another researcher thinks that Gottfried's first wife died after the second child and that he remarried to the wife's sister and that may account for the six year gap in births.  I will attempt to prove that.

I will be in Alsace Lorraine in late July and was hoping to search some church records there.  Do you perchance know where Dorothea was baptised?   I know little about Gottfried other than his place of birth (Wurtemberg) and his estimated birth year from the census.

Kindest regards,
Jerry

Looking through my old notes of course I can't find which on-line search was most useful to me at the time I was researching Alsace Lorraine. I did find this blog which I think was quite useful as a start.
https://www.thoughtco.com/how-to-research-french-ancestry-1421947

I'll keep looking ... bear in mind that you'll need a smattering of French to delve into the records!

I meant to mention also, you've probably noticed that in 1850 and 1860 there was a BASTIAN family living a couple of doors down from the WARNERs - Michael BASTIAN b France c1814 - a possible relative, or maybe a coincidence?

If Michael BASTIAN is related - it says on the 1855 census that he had been in NY for 18 years (so c1837)

Also, his grave (I think) - born 25 July 1814, died 16 Sept 1872

Mind you, he may not be related at all.  :-\
