George Phillips
« on: Tuesday 18 June 19 10:03 BST (UK) »
I am looking for information on George Phillips born 5th Oct 1863 in Portsea. The last record I can find is in the 1911 census (I believe) as a single fisherman. I have searched for a marriage record and there are several in 1914,1915 & 1918 in Portsmouth which would be the right age but no way of defining other than buying certs...or maybe he never married. I have the same problem with finding a death record with such a common name. Any assistance greatly appreciated. David

His parents were William and Harriet Phillips in the 1871 census aged 7 he had 5 siblings. This was of a total of about 10 eventual children. It is probable he was 'farmed out' to another family after that.
It was a common practice at that time. I have not found him in 1891 or 1901 census.so the 191I census as a lodger is a 'guess'. is also possible that he was a casualty in the 1914-1918 war (?)I have found any reference in the 'Miltary' in Ancestry. Don't know about namesakes. Not a lot to go on I'm afraid.

1939 index has one born 5 Oct 1865.
Likely the one you found in 1911 so I would rule out a Marriage.

Trish :)

I have not found him in 1891 or 1901 census.
so the 191I census as a lodger is a 'guess'.

Is this the same George from 1911 census?

His parents were William and Harriet Phillips in the 1871 census aged 7 he had 5 siblings.

Was his mother Harriet's maiden name HUGHES?

If so, this appears to be his birth registration

Mother's maiden name   HUGHES
District   Portsea Island Hampshire   Volume   2B Page   359

Edit
