Photo help. SA army. WW2 MEF
« on: Tuesday 18 June 19 15:03 BST (UK) »
Hi.
Im trying to research my grandfather Henry William Mack, also known as Harry.
He was a signaller in the army in ww2.
My mum has his death certificate which states he was born in 1921 in south africa and he dies in 1965 in south africa.
He married my gran Rachel (Ragel) Witbooi in 1943 in south africa (Im tring to research her family too)
We have a photo that is written To his sister Lily.
Ive not come across any family other then a Anna Maria and possibly 2 brothers.
Ive googled the codes VE as verbal message and MEF as Middle East Force. BT could be a few things Brevet Training or Benign Tertian (something to do with malaria?)
Any pointers on how/where to find some information about my south african roots would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
I hope ive attached the photo

Thank you. That probably would be good to find out about his army days.
How would I move the post?

Do you have any pointers on how to find other records for him such as to confirm his birth and find his parents? My mum believes some of his family are in fact in England where we are but she dosnt know any of her family anymore since she moved to England with my gran back in about 1970 and left everyone behind. (My mum was the baby of the family)

Gemma, my apologies as I wasn't clear...

A copy of the pic/writing would probably be best on the AF board as those people deal with Army info. all the time for deciphering etc.

I’m trying to find some information about my grandfather.
Only thing I know is he died in South Africa in 1963.
He married my gran Rachel (Ragel) Witbooi in 1943 in South Africa.
He was in the army.
My mum was told stories about he was a ‘desert rat’ he delivered messages by motorbike.
She only has this one photo.
He died when she was 2.
Her, my gran and my aunt emigrated in about 1970 to England and left rest of family behind in South Africa.
I thought I may find some information by looking into his army records but I’m struggling.
Any help very appreciated!
Thank you very much.
I’m going to try put photo in comments as can’t get it to upload.

Hi his marriage is indexed on family search - here is a link https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3QS7-899C-2931-K?i=179&cc=1935348 states he was born in the Transvaal

Do you know what church they belonged to? You may be able to find Baptism records.

If he was part of the SADF you can write to SANDOC and ak for a copy of his records especially since you have his service number sandfdoc@mweb.co.za they may take a while but they do respond. His service record may mention his parents as next of kin

The recommendation to contact the SA Defence Force contact given would have been my reply.

If that contact does not reply, an email asking for advice to info@dod.mil.za should yield results.

It is with great difficulty I share with you that in the early hours of 07 August 2021, Maximilian passed away unexpectedly but peacefully.
