Thank you for that information.
I had come across the marriage certificate thank you.
We don’t know a lot only odd bits my gran told my mum but she was only young. She was 2 when he died.
My gran passed away 12 years ago so I’m trying to find information for my mum as she has nothing.

Thank you.
I was told to move my post here but I didn’t know how to.
The SA board said people here could help with the address on back of photo? What MEF and BT depot could be and VE.
Sorry for duplicating.
I’ll use the original advice and see where I go.

MEF is Middle East Force which effectively means "the army in Egypt and North Africa"

BT is Base Transit Depot - unfortunately it should have a number, there were more than one.  Only his record may show which one it was and as this was after the end of hostilities, war diaries (which aren't digitised) won't help.

VE looks as if it is part of his army number.  It certainly is not related to his location.

It is with great difficulty I share with you that in the early hours of 07 August 2021, Maximilian passed away unexpectedly but peacefully.

With deep sadness,

They must have changed the address it is a while since I contacted them - I've just checked the SA Genealogy Facebook group they recommend this email address Archive@dod.mil.za

But I am sure the Info address will pass your request on

Happy hunting

Thank you Gillian.  I knew that the  details had changed but couldn't for the life of me remember or find what I posted back in February so I shamefully ducked the issue with the old address!!

A Rootschatter who contacted them in February received the goodies in March so it works!

I just wanted to say Thank you!
I had an email back from Department of Defence Archives at South Africa with a wealth of information.
I got all my grandads service records and found his mothers name!
Once again thank you for pointing me in that direction.
