Latin will of Thomas Croftys 1474 part 1
« on: Tuesday 18 June 19 15:11 BST (UK) »
This is going to be the last latin will for a while. It is a little longer than usual so I have split it into 5 parts.

I really do not need a full translation but these are the useful items:-

Date of will
Date of probate
Names
Occupations
Relationships

many thanks

Regarding Image 1, I can't translate everything here, but I believe this covers most of it:

Testator is Thomas Croftys de westale Armig(erus).

Date is 20 April 1474.

To be buried in the chapel of blessed marie? under the parish Church of St Audree of Westale.

Most of the rest comprises the usual pre-Reformation bequests; to the high altar of the same church, many bequests to various brothers (ie friars) of various types and to the reparation of the church of Specteshale.

His wife is Johanne.  She gets the household utensils and chatells moveable & unmoveable and the residue not already given etc.

His wife plus John Strannge Esquire, Edmund Jeney and Thomas Guche clerk vicar of westale are made executors (I think - the word on the sixth last line is heavily contracted)

Err, very far from it I'm afraid.  I was just regretting I didn't wait a bit longer to start on it.

I'm off to bed so the way is clear for you and all those others who do C15th Latin wills to have a go...

I'll carry on then, but perhaps you would look it over tomorrow, especially for names and place-names?
