Welcome  :)

You say you are expecting a birth c 1838 in Southwark/Lambeth, but the 1871 census shows him as aged 30 and born Westminster.

He is with wife Emma 22 and daughter Louisa 1: RG10/604/83/13.

Thanks for your assistance guys, I have looked at the John & Frances connection in Westminster previously, but am still undecided whether it is them or not. I don't believe it is.

On John's death in 1876 his age is down as 38 which does not tie in with John from Westminster, although I am aware that ages can get muddled up.

Thank you so much for the birth information, for some reason I didn't think to look for more children. John Dudley and Emma Fells had two other children, Louisa b1870 and William Daniel b1871 (which I had found). I believe William is my grandfather. Unfortunately the middle name Daniel has not appeared on any other records concernng William.

I’m not sure why you would prefer the age recorded at death (inevitably given by someone other than John, as he was dead) over the age he himself gave in the 1871 census?  Have you found another Westminster-born John Dudley at the right sort of time?

I agree with avm228. Census ages, especially taken over more than one, are more reliable than a death age.
The more instances you find of age given will help you pinpoint your ancestor.
If you trace John Dudley senior from Westminster, you may find his occupation matches that on the marriage certificate.
I am Australian, from all the lands I come (my ancestors, at least!)

Pine/Pyne, Dowdeswell, Kempster, Sando/Sandoe/Sandow, Nancarrow, Hounslow, Youatt, Richardson, Jarmyn, Oxlade, Coad, Kelsey, Crampton, Lindner, Pittaway, and too many others to name.
Devon, Dorset, Gloucs, Cornwall, Warwickshire, Bucks, Oxfordshire, Wilts, Germany, Sweden, and of course London, to name a few.
