Back to Veron's original query:

Can someone tell me what to put if I can't read a name, a birthplace or (in this case) an occupation? I transcribe for FreeBMD and I have currently used underscores where some letters can't be read (there is a huge black cross right through the middle of the occupation, I can read the first 2 and the last 2 letters, but they don't give a clue as to the whole word. ???

Thanks, Veron

Has it been decided yet what we should put if we can't read a name, birthplace etc etc?

I am about to start my first 1901 leftovers transcribing (gulp!!) and am sure there will be words I can't read ;D

Can anyone help with the attached?  I have some 1901 census ready to send but cannot read the first name on this list. I checked it out on Ancestry and that says it is Aasta Inglis.  Doesn't convince me.  I thought surname was Bylis and have no idea what first name is.  First letter does look like an A written further down page.

Also what about 3rd surname?  Is it Fenner or Femer or ?
Don't know where this entry is but I've found on 1901  Find my Past :
