Interwar sporting medals
« on: Friday 21 June 19 15:39 BST (UK) »
Hi all!
I know my great-grandad was active with the Manchester Regiment 1st. Bat. during the interwar years 1925-1928 and I know this because we have sporting medals from this period with Pte. James Walsh on them, along with the regiment and year. We also know from family stories that he was in the army around this time, but unfortunately we have no further information! I don't have his regiment number or whether he was in WW1. We only have the medals to go by. Does anyone know where I can find out more information on sporting medals that were handed out during army time? He received boxing, hockey and riffle medals. He was with the 1st Bat. Manchester Regiment who also went out to the Rhine in Germany at this time. By the way, I don't have his birth details either, and have no information on his parents, so when I look up WW1 documents, I have no idea if any of the James Walsh's listed are him  :(

Thanks for any suggestions!!

His marriage certificate should contain the name of his father, and father's occupation.

From that, try looking for an entry on the 1911 census.
With luck, you'll find his family ;D

His service record will still be with the MOD.
You don't need a service number to apply, but it will cost 30.

Thanks so much for your help KGarrad.

I do have the marriage certificate with his father's name and occupation, but haven't been able to find them in the 1911 census. My grandparents and family actually thinks they were originally from Ireland, so that may be why. I tried looking there too, but without a proper birth date or place of birth, there are so many people with the name of James Walsh and father of Timothy Walsh!  ???

I am going to take a look at the link you sent me though and see if I can order anything from the MOD! All I really have are these medals, so I am also trying to narrow that down too. I also found the newspaper that was produced by the BAOR (the Cologne Post) so trying that angle too!

Thanks again

But you DO need  his date of birth and a death cert (unless he died in service)

The only stupid question is the one not asked

Good evening,

Can you post pics of the medals, front and back. There may be some clues to be garnered from them.

Thanks John915! Here are some images of the medals. Let me know if you think there's anything that could be useful. Unfortunately, when I took the pictures the last time I was visiting my Grandad (I live in Canada), I only took pics of the side with the engravings, not the other sides...  Hopefully these images are still good with just the 1 side showing  :)

I have also uploaded a couple of Rifle/Revolver medals, plus a BAR medal too.

Thank you so much for your help!!
