Hi Lorraine, I don't do anything so precise I'm afraid! Ijust tend to say '4 x g. grandmother' regardless of the side of the family it's on and leave it at that.

Is this for ideas of how to present your tree to someone else, or for your own record keeping?
Waite, Marchant, Nash, Goddard, Pocock, Hiles, Switzer, Larondie, Harris, Radford, Monger, Harper, Harris, Sixsmith, Fitzgerald.

Hi Rachel

Both really

With two great-grandfathers
and
With two great-grandmothers

just wondered if there was a genealogical term to distinguish them

Like a second cousin vs a first cousin once removed - not asking for help on that!

It takes a little bit of getting used to, but use the numbers that are listed on an ahnentafel report, the genealogical numbering system for listing a person's direct ancestors in a fixed sequence of ascent.

That is all very well if the generations in the different families coincide, but what if there is a larger than average difference in the ages or birth dates of the marriage partner the generations could be different.
I feel you are making life difficult for yourself in trying to name generations.

Martin is right - I think that what you are looking for is an ahnentafel system, which shows these relationships clearly and is independent of generation lengths (as per Guy's comment).

For example:
